FINAL ESSAY — THE GREAT GATSBY
Symbolism in Fitzgerald's prose: a 4–5 page literary analysis
Choose ONE of: the green light, the valley of ashes, Doctor T. J. Eckleburg's eyes, or the seasons. Build a 4–5 page essay around a clear, debatable thesis answering: what does Fitzgerald's repeated use of this symbol reveal about the moral architecture of the novel?

Required: thesis in paragraph 1, three body paragraphs each anchored by a directly quoted passage with MLA in-text citation, a Works Cited (novel + 1 secondary source), and a revision memo addressing peer-review feedback.

Submit as PDF named Carter_Gatsby_Final.pdf. Late = 10%/day. Drafts must be peer-reviewed 48 hrs before final.
RUBRIC · 4 CRITERIA · 20 PTS
Thesis & Argument 5 pts
Original, debatable thesis sustained throughout; counter-claims anticipated.
Evidence & Analysis 5 pts
Evidence selected for word choice and structure — not summarized.
Organization & Voice 5 pts
Each paragraph builds the argument; voice precise and confident.
MLA & Mechanics 5 pts
Flawless MLA in-text + Works Cited; grammar polished.
Teacher feedback on draft (94/100): "Excellent thesis on the valley of ashes as moral indictment. Push the conclusion further — what's the implication beyond the novel?"

ORIGINAL PROMPT (from teacher)
AP US History — Final DBQ: Reagan Era & the End of the Cold War (1981–1991)

Prompt: Evaluate the extent to which the foreign and economic policies of the Reagan administration were responsible for the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War.

Use the seven attached documents (Reagan's "Evil Empire" speech, INF Treaty excerpt, Gorbachev's perestroika address, NSDD-75, a 1989 NSC memo on Eastern Europe, a Cato Institute economic analysis, and a Soviet defector interview). You must:
1. Establish a clear thesis with categories of analysis in your introduction.
2. Use at least 4 of the 7 documents as evidence; source (HIPP — historical situation, intended audience, point of view, purpose) at least 2.
3. Include at least one specific piece of outside evidence not in the documents (e.g., SDI, the 1986 Reykjavík Summit, Pope John Paul II's role in Poland, or the Soviet-Afghan War).
4. Demonstrate complexity by qualifying your argument — address counter-claims explicitly (e.g., internal Soviet structural failure, Eastern European agency, the role of Solidarity).
5. Contextualize the argument in broader Cold War history (1945 onward).

Format: handwritten in blue/black ink, 60 minutes plus 15-minute reading period. Graded on the College Board 7-point rubric. Late = no credit. Print and sign the academic-honesty cover sheet.
CLEAN BREAKDOWN
RUBRIC POINTS — 7 TOTAL
Thesis (1) · Contextualization (1) · Evidence — docs (3) · Outside evidence (1) · Sourcing — HIPP (1) · Complexity (1)
DOCUMENT STRATEGY
Use docs 1, 2, 4, 6 in body 1 (Reagan policy intent). Use docs 3, 5 in body 2 (Soviet collapse from inside). HIPP doc 1 (Reagan, intended audience = Western voters) and doc 3 (Gorbachev, purpose = pro-reform mandate).
OUTSIDE EVIDENCE — PICK ONE
SDI (best — connects directly to economic strain) · Reykjavík 1986 (links to INF) · Pope JPII / Poland (best for complexity) · Soviet-Afghan War (counter-claim leverage)
COMPLEXITY MOVE
Open paragraph 4 by qualifying: "While Reagan's policies accelerated the collapse, the structural failure of Soviet command-economy production preceded any external pressure." This earns the complexity point even if the rest of the argument is one-sided.
75-MIN PLAN
Reading 15 min · Outline + thesis 8 min · Body 1 (Reagan policy) 14 min · Body 2 (Soviet collapse) 14 min · Body 3 (counter-claim) 11 min · Conclusion 4 min · Cleanup 4 min.

The Cold War represented a fundamental shift in international relations following World War II. The ideological conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union shaped global politics for nearly five decades.

The Truman Doctrine, articulated in 1947, established the policy of containment that would define American foreign policy throughout the Cold War era.

The Marshall Plan provided over $13 billion in economic assistance to rebuild war-torn European economies. This strategic investment proved crucial in stabilizing Western Europe against communist influence.
